200 amp service upgrade in Dover, with the meter moved to the garage
September 2026 · Residential · Service upgrade · Dover, Calgary SE
Koop Electrical upgraded a Dover home in southeast Calgary to a 200 amp electrical service in September 2026, and moved the meter from the house to the detached garage so the overhead wires from the alley no longer cross the yard. The job cost $6,500. The house now has the capacity for an EV charger, air conditioning, a hot tub or a basement suite without another upgrade.
At a glance
Client: A homeowner in Dover, Calgary SE
Job type: 100 amp to 200 amp overhead service upgrade, with the meter relocated to the garage
Date: September 2026
Scope: New service mast and 200 amp meter base on the garage; new 200 amp panel in the garage; underground feed in conduit from the garage to the house panel; old service on the house removed; utility disconnect and reconnect coordinated with ENMAX; City of Calgary electrical permit and inspection
Cost: $6,500
Utility: ENMAX
The house
Dover is one of Calgary's 1970s communities where power still arrives overhead from a pole in the back alley. On this property the drop ran from the alley pole across the yard to the side of the house, and the house was still on its original 100 amp service. That was plenty in 1975. It is not enough for a household that wants to add an EV charger, air conditioning or a suite.
The problem
Two problems, one fix. The service was too small for what the owners wanted to add next, and the wires cutting across the yard were the first thing you saw from the deck. Because the garage sits at the alley, moving the service point to the garage solved both: the overhead run becomes a few metres from the pole to the garage roof, and the yard is clear.
What we did
Mounted a new service mast and a 200 amp meter base on the alley side of the garage, so the overhead drop now stops at the garage.
Installed a new 200 amp panel inside the garage, with a feed from the garage to the house's panel run underground in conduit.
Took down the old mast, meter and drop on the house and patched the wall.
Coordinated the disconnect and reconnect with ENMAX, and had the work inspected under a City of Calgary electrical permit.
The result
200 amps of capacity, a yard with no wires over it, and a garage that is ready for an EV charger. The owners put it simply: "Koop Electrical did a great job upgrading our service. What a difference it makes not having wires coming through our yard anymore. Highly recommend working with them."
Why 200 amps, and what it costs in Calgary
A 100 amp service was sized for a furnace, a stove and lights. A Level 2 EV charger draws 32 to 48 amps on its own, a hot tub 40 to 50, central air conditioning 20 to 30. Add one of those and a load management system usually bridges the gap for $1,500 to $2,000. Add two or three, or a suite, and the service itself has to grow.
This job was an overhead service, which is the simpler case, and cost $6,500. Where the service comes in underground, the buried line has to be replaced, and the price rises, often to $7,000 to $10,000. Either way the utility, ENMAX in Calgary, has to disconnect and reconnect, and the City has to inspect. We handle both.
