  • Job type: Hot tub wiring — dedicated 50 amp spa circuit

  • Date: July 2026

  • Scope: 50 amp two-pole circuit from the main panel; 50 amp GFCI spa disconnect (a "Spa Buddy" pack) mounted on the exterior wall in sight of the tub; conduit along the house and across the concrete patio; final connection to the tub's control pack; GFCI test and inspection

  • Cost: Koop's hot tub circuits run $1000 to $2,000 depending on the run

The setup

The tub sits under a cedar gazebo on a concrete patio at the back of the house, about 20 metres from the panel in the basement. The owners wanted the wiring out of sight, the disconnect where the code puts it, and no trench through the yard.

What the code asks for

GFCI spa disconnect mounted on the exterior wall within sight of the hot tub, with conduit running along the house, Redwood Meadows

A hot tub is one of the few things in a house that combines water, bare skin and 240 volts, so the Canadian Electrical Code is specific about it. The tub gets its own circuit, sized to the manufacturer's rating (50 amps for this one). The circuit is GFCI-protected, so a fault trips the power in a fraction of a second. A disconnect has to be within sight of the tub but not right beside it, so someone can cut the power without reaching over the water. Nothing electrical hangs over the tub, and the metal parts around it are bonded. The City of Calgary's own hot tub page says the same things in plainer words.

What we did

Conduit for a 50 amp hot tub circuit clipped along the siding and across the patio to the tub, installed by Koop Electrical
Inside the 50 amp GFCI spa disconnect: breaker and wiring for a hot tub circuit installed by Koop Electrical near Calgary
  • Ran a 50 amp circuit from the main panel to the back of the house.

  • Mounted the GFCI spa disconnect on the exterior wall, in sight of the tub and outside the reach zone.

  • Ran the conduit along the wall and across the patio to the gazebo, clipped tight to the siding so it disappears against the house.

  • Connected the tub's control pack and tested the GFCI.

The result

A tub that is safe to use, wiring you have to look for to see, and an owner who wrote: "Ryan from Koop Electrical did a phenomenal job, clean, fast and very good to work with. Would highly recommend."
